Privacy Policy

Integrity Index ("we", "us") operates integrityindex.ca, an independent, non-partisan Canadian political-transparency website. We publish the public record of federal and provincial representatives: financial disclosures, recorded votes, stock trades, lobbying communications and related data drawn from official registers.

We are based in Ontario, Canada. Questions about this policy, or requests about your information, go to [email protected].

This policy applies to visitors of integrityindex.ca and to anyone who writes to us. It is written to be consistent with Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). It does not cover the official government websites we link to, which have their own policies.

If you email us, we keep your address and message for as long as we need them to answer you and to keep a record of corrections we have made. If you submit your email address to receive updates from us, we use it only to send those updates and delete it when you ask.

We do not ask you to create an account, and we do not collect payment information.

Like almost every website, our hosting providers keep standard server logs when you load a page or when your browser calls our data API. A log entry contains your IP address, browser type, the address requested and the time. We use these logs to keep the site running, to investigate abuse and outages, and to apply rate limits to our API. Rate limiting keys on your IP address for the duration of the request window only.

We measure page performance with a small beacon that reports the page path, timing metrics (Core Web Vitals) and a coarse connection type such as "4g". The beacon carries no cookie, no user identifier and no precise location.

We do not run third-party analytics scripts, session recording or fingerprinting.

We set a small number of first-party cookies and browser-storage entries so the site remembers your preferences. None of them identify you, and none are shared with anyone.

• ii_locale — the language you chose (English or French). Cookie, kept for one year.
• ii.savedRiding — the riding you saved with "My riding" so we can show your representatives first. Cookie, kept for 60 days.
• integrity-jurisdiction and integrity-provincial-gov — the jurisdiction you last browsed. Browser local storage, kept until you clear it.
• ii-continuity-state — the last page you visited, so we can offer to take you back to it. Browser local storage, kept until you clear it.

You can delete these at any time from your browser's settings. The site keeps working without them.

We fund the site with advertising served by Google AdSense. Google is a third-party vendor that uses cookies to serve ads on this site. Google's use of advertising cookies, including the DoubleClick cookie, enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to integrityindex.ca and to other sites on the internet.

You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can opt out of some other third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalized advertising at www.aboutads.info. Google explains how it uses information from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Other third-party vendors and ad networks may also serve ads on this site through Google's network. If you visit from a region where the law requires consent before advertising cookies are used, such as the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, a consent message is shown before those cookies are set, and you can change your choice later.

Advertisements do not influence which representatives or records we publish, and we do not share the content of your correspondence with advertisers.

We rely on a small set of providers to run the site. Each processes only what it needs for its role:

• Netlify hosts the website and keeps the server logs described above.
• Railway hosts our data API, and Supabase hosts our database. Neither stores information about visitors beyond the request logs described above.
• CARTO serves the background map tiles on our riding maps. When you open a map, your browser requests tiles directly from CARTO, which sees your IP address in the same way any website you load does.
• Google serves advertising, as described in the previous section.

Fonts are bundled with the site and served from our own domain, so opening a page makes no request to Google Fonts or any other font service.

Some of these providers store data in the United States. Where that happens, your information is protected by our contracts with them, but it may be subject to that country's laws.

The representatives whose records we publish are public office-holders, and the data comes from official public sources: the House of Commons, the Office of the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner, the Registry of Lobbyists, provincial legislatures and their integrity commissioners, and government open-data portals. We process it for the purpose of public accountability and reporting.

Every record on a profile links to the source it came from. A representative, or anyone acting for them, can ask us to review a record by writing to [email protected]. We re-check the source and correct or annotate the entry, and we note material corrections on the profile.

We use the information described above to operate and secure the site, to answer your messages, to send updates you have asked for, to measure and improve performance, and to show advertising that funds the site. We rely on your consent where the law requires it (for example for advertising cookies in some regions) and otherwise on the purposes a reasonable person would consider appropriate for a public-interest website.

We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it to build profiles of visitors.

We share information only with the providers listed above, in the limited ways described, and when the law requires us to, for example in response to a valid court order. We would tell you about such a request where we are permitted to.

• Server and API logs: a short rolling period set by our hosting providers, typically no more than 30 days.
• Correspondence: as long as needed to answer you and to document any correction, then deleted.
• Cookies and local storage: for the periods listed in the cookies section, or until you clear them.

You can clear or block our cookies in your browser, opt out of personalized advertising through the links above, and ask us at any time what information we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it. We answer such requests within 30 days.

If you are in Canada and believe we have not handled your information properly, you can also complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

The site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, write to us and we will delete it.

The site is served only over HTTPS. Access to our infrastructure is limited to the people who maintain it and protected by strong authentication. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot promise absolute security, but we take reasonable steps to protect the little information we hold.

When we change this policy we update the date at the top of this page. Material changes are also noted on our blog. Continued use of the site after a change means you accept the updated policy.
